From the trip
The Chalet
A traditional Swiss farmhouse in Val d'Illiez, a quiet village in the Valais at around 900 metres. Wooden beams, a large communal table, a terrace facing the mountains, and enough space for everyone to find their own corner. Far enough from the city to feel like a proper change of scene — close enough that getting there doesn't take half your day.
The area
Val d'Illiez sits in the Portes du Soleil — a wide alpine valley in the Valais, just above Monthey. In summer it's quiet, green, and uncrowded, with hiking trails starting straight from the village and the larger resort of Champéry a short drive away. The kind of place that feels like it belongs to the people who live there.
🚆 Closest train station: Pont de Fayot — the chalet is also reachable by car, with free parking on site.
How the days unfolded
THURSDAY
Arrived from 3pm.
We dropped our bags and got settled. The group met in the evening for a welcome dinner — no agenda, just the first meal together. A good way to start.
FRIDAY
A full work day.
The communal table filled up in the morning. Everyone worked their normal schedule — calls, deadlines, whatever the day brought. We had lunch together, then the afternoon at our own pace, and dinner as a group in the evening.
SATURDAY
Champéry.
We took the train to Champéry, a classic Alpine village at the foot of the Dents du Midi. We had lunch there, wandered for a while, and were back before dinner.
SUNDAY
Into the hills, then home.
We went on a morning hike in the surroundings with our local host, with trails starting right from the valley. After lunch, we packed up and headed back.
